imipenem /im·i·pen·em/ (im″ĭ-pen´em) a β with a broad spectrum of activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. imipenem one of the carbapenem group of antibiotics which are β-lactamase resistant. It has a very wide spectrum, but is inactivated by renal tubular enzymes and is given in association with cilastatin, which inhibits renal metabolism. Called also thienamycin.
