n.
A determinant that confers on an immunoglobulin molecule an antigenic individuality that is analogous to the individuality of the molecule's antibody activity.

idiotype
[id′ē·ətīp′]
Etymology: Gk, idios + typos, mark
the portion of an immunoglobulin molecule that confers the molecule's unique character, most often including its antigen-binding site.

idiotype (iˈ·dē·ō·tīpˑ),
n the region of an immunoglobulin molecule responsible for the unique characteristics of the molecule. In most cases, this includes the antigen-binding location.

idiotype
the antigenic characteristic of the variable region of an antibody. A set of idiotopes. Called also Id.

cross-reacting idiotype (IdX)
one that is present on other immunoglobulins produced in response to the same antigen, permitting a cross reaction. See also cross-reaction.

This test involves separation of EPO idiotypes by isoelectric focussing, immunoblotting, and detection of IgG labeled with streptiverdin-peroxidase.
Idiotypes can provoke anti-idiotypes, which in turn can provoke anti-idiotypes that attach to the initial provoker as well as to the anti-idiotype.
