idiotype [id′ē·ətīp′] Etymology: Gk, idios + typos, mark the portion of an immunoglobulin molecule that confers the molecule's unique character, most often including its antigen-binding site. idiotype (iˈ·dē·ō·tīpˑ), n the region of an immunoglobulin molecule responsible for the unique characteristics of the molecule. In most cases, this includes the antigen-binding location.
idiotype the antigenic characteristic of the variable region of an antibody. A set of idiotopes. Called also Id. cross-reacting idiotype (IdX) one that is present on other immunoglobulins produced in response to the same antigen, permitting a cross reaction. See also cross-reaction.
