Expanding on Erikson's theory, Marcia (1966) proposed four identity statuses, through which adolescents can realize the goal of identity: identity diffusion, identity foreclosure, identity moratorium, and identity achievement.
Identity diffusion is characterized by the absence of both exploration and commitment.
The shifting of terminology between mental health counselor and professional counselor and reference to the history of mental health counseling serve to highlight the identity diffusion.
