A gene on chromosome 13q34 that encodes a cytoplasmic signalling protein phosphorylated by insulin receptor tyrosine kinase; it mediates the effects of insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1 and other cytokines by acting as a molecular adaptor between various receptor tyrosine kinases and downstream effectors.
