(hī'pō-kal-sē'mē-ă)
Abnormally low levels of calcium in the circulating blood; commonly denotes subnormal concentrations of calcium ions.
Synonym(s): hypocalcaemia.

hypocalcaemia

Inadequate blood levels of calcium. This may be caused by inadequate intake or absorption, low output of hormone by the parathyroid glands (HYPOPARATHYROIDISM) or PANCREATITIS. The result may be TETANY. The proportion of blood calcium in the ionized form is reduced in ALKALOSIS and this, too may cause tetany.

hypocalcaemia

abnormally low blood levels of calcium (i.e. <2.20 mmol/L), characterized by increased neuromuscular excitability, peripheral paraesthesia, muscle cramps, epileptic fits, laryngeal spasm, acute hypertension, dry scaly skin, hair loss and brittle nails, cataract formation, basal ganglia calcification, cardiomegaly and tetany; Chvostek's and Trousseau's signs are positive
