hyoglossal [hī′ō-glos′əl] Etymology: Gk, hyoeides, upsilon, U-shaped glossa, tongue pertaining to the tongue and the horseshoe-shaped hyoid bone at the base of the tongue immediately above the thyroid cartilage. Also glossohyal. hyoglossal [hi″o-glos´al] pertaining to the hyoid bone and tongue or to the hyoglossal muscle.
