hydroxypropyl cellulose /hy·droxy·pro·pyl cel·lu·lose/ (-pro´pil sel´u-lōs) a partially substituted, water-soluble cellulose ether, used as a pharmaceutic aid and as a topical ophthalmic protectant and lubricant.

a water-soluble derivative of cellulose, used as a pharmaceutic aid and also applied topically to the conjunctiva to protect and lubricate the cornea in the treatment of dry eye.
