A jury last week convicted the 67-year-old man on two counts each of possession and distribution of gamma hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, an illegal depressant commonly referred to as a "date rape" drug because of its anesthetic properties.
A 67-year-old Springfield man, Richard Hans Norland, will be sentenced Friday for possessing and selling gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) in a case that began with an investigation of the suicide of a woman who was addicted to the drug.
GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate, was first developed for anesthesia during surgery, but in the last few years the tasteless, colorless liquid has become increasingly popular among teens for its capacity to produce feelings of euphoria, trippiness, and drunkenness.
