a genus of head flies in the family Muscidae. Their importance depends on their proclivity for sweat, blood and tears. They cause insect worry in all animal species and in lexicographers.

Hydrotoea albipuncta, Hydrotoea meteorica, Hydrotoea occulta
sweat flies of horses and humans.
Hydrotoea dentipes
a dung fly, not recorded as annoying animals.
Hydrotoea irritans
the sheep head fly; causes insect worry, some damage to the skin around the horns and may predispose sheep, and sometimes cattle, to blowfly strike. Implicated in the transmission of summer mastitis in cows.
