Researchers are attempting to validate that ILI tools can, in some situations, provide an assessment that would find any defect that would fail a hydrotest.
The end result of the research will be a calculator that operators can use to determine the performance requirements of ILI tools for a specific line segment to provide a hydrotest equivalency.

Discharge limits for iron and total suspended solids in pipeline hydrotest water are becoming more stringent.

For example, because pipelines constructed before adoption of federal safety rules in 1970 and California's state safety rules in 1961 are exempt (grandfathered) from post-construction hydrostatic pressure testing requirements to establish maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP), Line 132 did not undergo a hydrotest that would likely have exposed a defective long seam weld.
If the provision is eliminated, the pipeline industry could be required to hydrotest thousands of miles of pipe, potentially resulting in pressure reductions, service outages, environmental issues associated with hydrotest water disposal and significant costs.
The new system was employed alongside an older analog monitoring system during a hydrotest project on an Italian pipeline.
The digital hydrotest monitoring and control system appears to offer greater precision and reliability with respect to the analysis of events and the recording of data in real time.
Using the Remote Flooding Module (RFM) and Subsea Hydrotest Pump (SHP) on behalf of Subsea 7 and Chevron, Norson says it flooded and pigged 15 subsea pipelines from 3-12-inches in diameter, 4-9 km in length in water depths of over 550 m, with filtered, treated water all in accordance with specifications.
