In Figure 3, the upper dashed curves represent critical flaw sizes for the operating stress, the heavy solid curves represent critical flaw sizes for the required hydrostatic test level for the respective operating class and the tool measurement error is accounted for by the four light solid curves assuming 5% to 20% error at 80% certainty (POD).
This feature allows for greater hydrostatic test data interpretation, more reliable test administration and easier test data documentation.
After the hydrostatic test is completed, the pipeline will be emptied and the water will be tested before it is discharged into the city's sewer system.
Separately, the utility has plans to do 95 hydrostatic tests this year, covering 150 miles of its transmission pipe in HCA locations.

However, underestimating the maximum flaw size that will survive a hydrostatic test means that larger-than-expected flaws can remain in the pipe.
The advisory bulletin was issued during the 2008-2009 pipeline construction periods because several newly constructed large-diameter, 20-inch or greater, high-strength (AP1 5L X70 and X80) natural gas and hazardous liquid pipelines experienced field hydrostatic test failures, in-service leaks, or in-service failures of line pipe girth welds.
But the only internal testing standard is that a pipeline undergo at least one hydrostatic test after it is put in service.

A typical industry hydrostatic test involves purging all natural product out of the pipeline, cleaning the inside of the pipeline, filling the pipe segment with water and pressurizing the pipeline to a level higher than normal operating pressure and "holding" that pressure for a predetermined time duration.
