This feature allows for greater hydrostatic test data interpretation, more reliable test administration and easier test data documentation.
Lake Superior Consulting, "The expansion hydro-test project presented an extreme set of challenges from product displacement with approximately 640,000 bbls of water to conducting six hydrostatic tests simultaneously over a total of 110 miles.
The number of parties with direct involvement of conducting six hydrostatic tests simultaneously and doing this in a safe and coordinated manner further added to the complexity of the project.
Under normal soil and climate conditions, when a hydrostatic test leak occurs, there is an immediate drop in pressure and water is released.
Water disposal following the hydrostatic test program can be a major environment concern.
Two years after completion of the successful hydrostatic test program, a catastrophic failure occurs at an operating pressure significantly lower than recent hydrostatic test pressures.
The frequency for pipeline hydrostatic testing must equate to the time required for a flaw to grow from a geometry that just survived a hydrostatic test to a geometry that becomes critical at the operating pressure of the pipeline.
This possible, but simplistic, worst case-based hypothetical scenario does not account for all influencing factors, however does serve to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of the hydrostatic test program.
A Best Practices approach to a hydrostatic test IMP-based program should:
Another critical consideration is venting the air pocket out of the top of the valve body during the hydrostatic test and in liquids pipelines at start-up.
Because the air is compressible this can give inconsistencies and/or erroneous data in the hydrostatic test report.
Upon the completion of a successful hydrostatic test of the pipeline the test pressure can be reduced down to the MOP in order to verify valve seal integrity.
