hydantoin [hīdan′tō·in] any one of a group of anticonvulsant medications, chemically and pharmacologically similar to the barbiturates, that acts to limit seizure activity and reduce the spreading of abnormal electrical excitation from the focus of the seizure. A primary hydantoin in the management of almost all forms of epilepsy is phenytoin, formerly known as diphenylhydantoin. Frequent determination of the blood concentration of hydantoin is necessary. Such chemical compounds include reactive gases like ozone, liquids such as acids, bases, isocyanates and peracids, and solids like peroxides, hydantoins, triazine triones and other oxidizers such as potassium permanganate. Arnold, a chemistry professor at Caltech, Degussa designed and developed a highly versatile platform technology based on tailor-made whole cell biocatalyst that convert 5-monosubstituted hydantoins into either an L- or D-amino acids in one pot with up to 100 percent chemical and optical yield. Cerebyx(R) (fosphenytoin sodium injection) is contraindicated in patients who have demonstrated hypersensitivity to Cerebyx or its ingredients, or to phenytoin or other hydantoins. |
