n. Abbr. HLA
A gene product of the major histocompatibility complex; these antigens have been shown to have a strong influence on human allotransplantation, transfusions in refractory patients, and certain disease associations.

human leukocyte antigen (HLA),
n a collection of human genes on chromosome 6 that encode proteins that function in cells to transport antigens from within the cell to the cell surface. These proteins are sometimes referred to as the MHC, or major histocompatibility complex.
