| Although candidemia is perceived as a hospital-acquired infection, changes in medical practice to more frequent use of home healthcare for many illnesses and long-term indwelling vascular devices have increased the number of susceptible patients in the community, potentially increasing incidence and changing epidemiology. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that as many as 60% of hospital-acquired infections around the world are caused by drug resistant microbes. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 100,000 people die each year from hospital-acquired infections, and an additional 2 million patients, or 6 percent to 10 percent of inpatients, acquire infections during their hospital stay. |
