By the early 1950s, under the Hill-Burton Hospital Survey and Construction Act, funding became available for the construction of nursing homes, and the number of these homes grew.
In 1946 Congress passed the Hospital Survey and Construction Act, which provided $150 million in federal funds to help "public and non-profit" hospitals expand their facilities.
