horseshoe kidney,

a relatively common congenital anomaly characterized by an isthmus of parenchymal tissue connecting the two kidneys at the lower poles. The condition may cause obstruction of the ureters, hydronephrosis, and abdominal pain. It is corrected by surgery to separate and reposition the kidneys.
