hippocampus [hip′ōkam′pəs] pl. hippocampi Etymology: Gk, hippokampos, seahorse a curved convoluted elevation of the floor of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle of the brain. It is composed of gray substance covered by a layer of white fibers, the alveus, and functions as an important component of the limbic system and of memory processing. Hippocampus A paired structure located within the medial temporal lobe under the cortical surface, which is a major component of the limbic system of the mammalian brain where it plays a key role in long-term memory and spatial orientation Effects of damage The hippocampus is one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, resulting in loss of memory and disorientation. It is also affected by hypoxia, encephalitis, and medial temporal lobe epilepsy. Extensive hippocampal damage often results in amnesia and loss of short-term memory hippocampus [hip″o-kam´pus] (L.) a curved elevation of gray matter on the floor of the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle; it is an important functional component of the limbic system.
