hindgut /hind·gut/ (-gut) the embryonic structure from which the caudal intestine, chiefly the colon, is formed.

n.
1. The large intestine, rectum, and anal canal.
2. The caudal or terminal part of the embryonic gut.

Etymology: ME, hind + AS, guttas
the caudal portion of the embryonic alimentary canal. It is formed by the development of the tail fold and eventually gives rise to part of the small and large intestines, rectum, bladder, and urogenital ducts. Compare foregut, midgut. See also cloaca.

Third instar larvae grown on food contaminated with the highest concentration of the effluent (100 [micro]L/mL) exhibited dark blue staining (in 97% larvae) in salivary gland, proventriculus, midgut, hindgut, gastric ceca, and brain ganglia after 2 hr of treatment (Figure 2H).
These researchers observed that spirochetes were commonly present in the midgut of infected ticks and occasionally seen in the hindgut and rectal ampule.
By the end of 4 weeks of gestation, the hindgut and future urogenital system reach the surface of the embryo at the cloacal membrane on the ventral surface.
