Third instar larvae grown on food contaminated with the highest concentration of the effluent (100 [micro]L/mL) exhibited dark blue staining (in 97% larvae) in salivary gland, proventriculus, midgut, hindgut, gastric ceca, and brain ganglia after 2 hr of treatment (Figure 2H). These researchers observed that spirochetes were commonly present in the midgut of infected ticks and occasionally seen in the hindgut and rectal ampule. By the end of 4 weeks of gestation, the hindgut and future urogenital system reach the surface of the embryo at the cloacal membrane on the ventral surface. |
