hindgut /hind·gut/ (-gut) the embryonic structure from which the caudal intestine, chiefly the colon, is formed.

1. The large intestine, rectum, and anal canal.
2. The caudal or terminal part of the embryonic gut.

[hīnd′gut]
Etymology: ME, hind + AS, guttas
the caudal portion of the embryonic alimentary canal. It is formed by the development of the tail fold and eventually gives rise to part of the small and large intestines, rectum, bladder, and urogenital ducts. Compare foregut, midgut. See also cloaca.

hindgut [hīnd´gut]
a pocket formed beneath the caudal portion of the developing embryo, which develops into the distal portion of the small intestine, the colon, and the rectum.
