Hexamita

Hexamita
a genus of flagellated protozoa in the family Hexamitidae.

Hexamita columbae
occurs in the small intestine of pigeons and may cause enteritis.
Hexamita meleagridis
a major parasite of turkeys in which it produces an enteritis, which may cause serious losses with a mortality rate of up to 80%. Can cause disease in other species of birds.

Hexamita muris
occurs in the intestines of rodents and causes enteritis.
Hexamita pitheci
occurs in the large intestine of rhesus and other monkeys.
Hexamita salmonis
found in the intestine of salmonids and may cause acute enteritis or may become systemic and cause death. Hexamita-like organisms can be associated with hole-in-the-head disease in aquarium fish, especially discus and oscar.
Hexamita truttae
found in the intestines of fish; causes enteritis, peritonitis, cholecystitis in debilitated fish.
