These heterochromatin differences are the likely cause of a striking DNA content variation (approximately 30%) between Andean and non-Andean insects. The nuclei were round and many were indented, and they featured both prominent nucleoli and small amounts of peripherally located heterochromatin. An increase in the mitochondrial fraction, the size of single myonuclei, and a decrease in their heterochromatin fraction were significantly more pronounced in the type II fibers than in type I fibers. |
