Hepatozoon a genus of protozoan parasites in the family Haemogregarinidae. Hepatozoon canis found in dogs and other canines and in cats, in circulating leukocytes and bone marrow cells. Transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Causes intermittent fever, anemia, loss of weight, splenomegaly and posterior paralysis, but many infected animals are clinically normal. Hepatozoon cuniculi occurs in rabbits. Hepatozoon griseisciuri occurs in gray squirrels. Hepatozoon muris occurs in rats and transmitted by rat mites. Hepatozoon musculi found in white mice.
