hepatorenal syndrome, a type of kidney failure characterized by a gradual loss of function without signs of tissue damage. It is associated with hepatitis or cirrhosis of the liver; its exact cause is unknown. hepatorenal [hep″ah-to-re´nal] pertaining to the liver and kidneys. hepatorenal syndrome oliguria and renal failure in a patient with anatomically and morphologically normal kidneys in the presence of liver failure. Prognosis is poor.
