Hemoglobin F

hemoglobin F (Hb F),
the normal hemoglobin of the fetus. Most Hb F is replaced by hemoglobin A in the first days after birth. Hb F has an increased capacity to carry oxygen and is present in increased amounts in some pathologic conditions, including sickle cell anemia, aplastic anemia, and leukemia. Small amounts are produced throughout life.

High levels of hemoglobin F had previously been found in infants born to mothers with chronic low oxygen resulting from severe asthma, anemia or heart failure.
University of Wisconsin at Madison scientists report they have found elevated levels of hemoglobin F (fetal) in the blood of infants whose cause of death was listed as SIDS.
