Heliotropium plant genus of the Boraginaceae family; contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids; causes hepatic injury and a syndrome of depression, jaundice and photosensitization. Also a significant contributor to the development of toxemic jaundice in sheep; may also cause sufficient intravascular hemolysis to result in hemoglobinuria and hemolytic anemia. Includes H. amplexicaule, H. europaeum, H. ovalifolium. Called also heliotrope. How to thank TFD for its existence?
