Healthcare Resource Group

A national (UK) standard aggregation of healthcare activity and the resources required to deliver it. HRGs provide a system of coding of health service data to identify and group similar healthcare interventions, and are designed to help service planning by providing relatively detailed statistics on interventions provided at secondary and tertiary centres. Version 4, for instance, was designed to support the Department of Health’s Payment by Results plan, in which the price (tariff) is meant to reflect the complexity of service during the patient care episode, and to underpin the move towards practice-based commissioning and payment by results.
