hawthorn /haw·thorn/ (haw´thorn) a shrub or tree of the genus Crataegus, or a preparation of the flowers, fruit, and leaves of certain of its species, having a mechanism of action similar to that of digitalis; used to decrease output in congestive heart failure; also used in traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, and folk medicine.

an herbal product taken from a bush or tree found throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia.
uses It is used for poor circulation, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, high blood lipids, and high blood pressure. Several studies have shown beneficial effects of hawthorn in heart failure; there are insufficient reliable data for its other uses.
contraindications It should not be used during pregnancy and lactation or in children. It is also contraindicated in those with known hypersensitivity to this herb or other members of the Rosaceae family.
