osteon [os′tē·on] Etymology: Gk, bone the basic central structural unit of compact bone, consisting of the haversian canal and its concentric rings of 4 to 20 lamellae. Most of the units run with the long axis of the bone. Also called haversian system. osteon (os´tēon), n the three-dimensional reconstruction of concentric lamellae arranged circumferentially about the course of a central blood vessel. osteon the basic unit of structure of compact bone, comprising a haversian canal and its concentrically arranged lamellae.
