n.
An autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland, resulting in diffuse goiter, infiltration of the thyroid gland with lymphocytes, and hypothyroidism. Also called Hashimoto's thyroiditis, lymphadenoid goiter, struma lymphomatosa.

Hashimoto's disease
a progressive disease of the thyroid gland with degeneration of its epithelial elements and replacement by lymphoid and fibrous tissue; called also struma lymphomatosis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Similar to lymphocytic thyroiditis in dogs.

It is thought that parathyroiditis represents an autoimmune process similar to thyroid gland Hashimoto's disease.
Between 6 and 7 million people suffer from hypothyroidism, the most common type being Hashimoto's disease, named for the Japanese doctor who first described the process that causes the thyroid to fail.
