salinity

the degree of saltiness, which is high in, for example, enclosed seas, and low in estuaries where the normal salinity of the sea may be diluted by fresh river water. It is defined as the total amount of dissolved solids in water in parts per thousand by weight, and in seawater is approximately 35 g per kg of liquid.
