sib. One of two or more children who have both parents in common; a brother or sister. The number, age differences, sex, and birth order of siblings can greatly affect the childhood environment and relationships within a family, which also may include step-siblings and half-siblings. Sibling rivalry and jealousy are common in firstborn children, especially when there is a 2- to 4-year difference in age. In general, sibling relationships help teach the child important social patterns and moral values, such as competitiveness, loyalty, and sharing.
