Any of a family of plants that resemble ginseng, which may be substituted for true ginseng; the root is used for anorexia, chronic cough, chronic fatigue, diabetes, diarrhoea, dyspnoea, oedema, postsurgical and postpartum fatigue, hypertension, immune deficiency, indigestion, prolapsed rectum and uterus, increased thirst, and as a cardiotonic.
