Haemoproteus a genus of protozoan blood parasites of the family Plasmodiidae. Cause of avian 'malaria'. Haemoproteus antigonis found in cranes. Haemoproteus canachites found in grouse; transmitted by Culicoides spp. Haemoproteus columbae found in pigeons, doves and some wild birds. Transmitted by hippoboscid flies. May cause anemia in squabs. Haemoproteus danilewski found in wild birds. Haemoproteus lophortyx found in quail. Transmitted by biting flies. May cause anemia. Haemoproteus meleagridis occurs in turkeys. Haemoproteus nettionis found in ducks, geese, swans. Haemoproteus sacharovi found in doves. Culicoides spp. possibly the vector.
