Because the HIV antibody test can take up to 6 months to turn positive, both partners would need to test negative 6 months after their last potential exposure to HIV. Researchers think that their results confirm that in areas of high HIV prevalence, the sensitivity of a single HIV antibody test can be as low as 96% because of the presence of significant numbers of previously unrecognised acute HIV infections in the population being tested. Immunofluorescence antibody testing and Western blot (or other approved manufacturer's EIA kit) testing on another blood sample were used as confirmatory tests on positive or indeterminate HIV antibody test results. |
