an instrument for determining physical properties of anything, including caliber, dimensions, or pressure.

n an instrument used to determine the dimensions or caliber of an object.
gauge, Boley,
n.pr a vernier type of instrument used for measuring in the metric system. It is accurate to tenths of millimeters.
gauge, leaf,
n a device for measuring the distance between two objects. A leaf gauge consists of a series of thin strips of plastic or metal, each calibrated and arranged in a sequential fashion in ascending or descending thicknesses, usually expressed in millimeters or fractions of millimeters. In dentistry, the leaf gauge is used to measure interocclusal space or the magnitude of an interocclusal interference.

n an attachment used in conjunction with a dental cast surveyor to measure the amount of infrabulge of a tooth in a horizontal plane.
