griseofulvin /gris·eo·ful·vin/ (gris″e-o-ful´vin) an antibiotic produced by Penicillium griseofulvum ; used as an antifungal in dermatophytoses.

An antibiotic administered orally for the treatment of ringworm and other fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails.

indications It is prescribed in the treatment of certain fungal infections of the skin, hair, and nails.
contraindications Liver dysfunction, porphyria, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use.
adverse effects The most serious adverse effects are blood dyscrasias. Headache, GI symptoms, and rashes also may occur.

griseofulvin
a fungistatic antibiotic produced by Penicillium griseofulvum used orally for treatment of fungal infections of the skin. Toxic effects include bone marrow suppression and teratogenicity.

Microbiology An oral antifungal with an affinity for skin, used to treat dermatophytoses–eg, Epidermophyton spp, Microsporum spp, Trichophyton spp Adverse effects Headache, N&V, diarrhea, photosensitivity, fever, rash, dysfunction of hepatic, CNS, hematopoietic systems; it is teratogenic and carcinogenic in rodents.
