Green Run

A secret US government experiment carried out in 1949 at the Hanford plutonium production facility in Washington state, in which radioactive fission products were deliberately released into the Columbia River to see if the radioactivity (5,500 to 12,000 curies/200 to 440 TBq) of 131I and 133Xe could be detected by US Air Force reconnaissance.
