n 1. an examination of records or accounts to check accuracy.
n 2. a posttreatment record review or clinical examination to verify information reported on claims.
audit of treatment,
n 1. an administrative or professional review of a participating dental professional's treatment recommendations (peer audit).
n 2. the review of reimbursement claims for service performed (postaudit).

audit
systematic review and evaluation of records and other data to determine the quality of the services or products provided in a given situation.

retrospective audit
conducted after the patient's discharge. Methods include the study of closed patients' charts and nursing care plans, questionnaires, interviews, and surveys of patients and other animals in the household.
