An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of a phospholipid. Also called lecithinase.

any of a group of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of phospholipids. Various phospholipases digest cell membranes, aid in the synthesis of prostaglandins, and help produce arachidonic acid, one of the essential fatty acids.
