glucosinolates

glucosinolates (glōō·kōˑ·sin·ō·lāts),
n.pl glycoside compounds that are found in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage and that contribute to the pungency of mustard and horseradish. They act as irritants and are sometimes used as antiinflammatories, antifungals, and antibacterials. They may have anticarcinogenic effects.

substances in Brassica spp. crops which are degraded in the rumen to thiocyanates which may cause congenital goiter by interfering with the absorption of iodine.

Cauliflowers contain glucosinolates, which are said to prevent cancer by helping get rid of carcinogenic agents by getting rid of them before they can do any damage, and also help protect healthy cells from being infected.
As oilseed rape is important as a feed crop, increased levels of glucosinolates may cause problems due to the large quantities of fodder consumed by farm animals.
Glucosinolates are secondary metabolites of plants belonging to the Brassicales family.
