gastric inhibitory polypeptide
n. Abbr. GIP
A peptide hormone secreted by the stomach that stimulates insulin release as part of the digestive process.

gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP),
a GI hormone found in the mucosa of the small intestine. Release of the hormone, mediated by the presence of glucose or fatty acids in the duodenum, results in the release of insulin by the pancreas and inhibition of gastric mobility acid secretion.

The insulinotropic actions of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-37) in normal and diabetic subjects.
A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study was conducted in 16 healthy adults to assess the potential complementary effects of sitagliptin and metformin on GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).
Incretin hormones, including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), are released by the intestine throughout the day, and levels are increased in response to a meal.
