thrombasthenia /throm·bas·the·nia/ (throm″bas-the´ne-ah) a platelet abnormality characterized by defective clot retraction and impaired ADP-induced platelet aggregation; clinically manifested by epistaxis, inappropriate bruising, and excessive posttraumatic bleeding.

Etymology: Gk, thrombos, lump, a + sthenos, not strength
a rare hemorrhagic disease characterized by a defect in platelet-mediated hemostasis caused by an abnormality in the membrane surface of the platelet. The platelets do not aggregate, a clot does not form, and hemorrhage ensues. Transfusion with platelets is effective in controlling the hemorrhage. The condition is an inherited autosomal-recessive trait.

a platelet abnormality characterized by defective clot retraction and impaired ADP-induced platelet aggregation. There are mild bleeding tendencies. Inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder in Otterhounds. Called also Glanzmann's disease, Glanzmann-Naegeli syndrome.
