Geotrichum

Geotrichum /Ge·ot·ri·chum/ (je-ah´trĭ-kum) a genus of yeastlike fungi, including G. can´didum, found in the feces and in dairy products.

Geotrichum candidum
a species found in feces and in dairy products. Causes a systemic infection, especially in animals in captivity, and has been associated with necrosis of the scales in snakes. May be associated with bovine mastitis. See also geotrichosis.

Twenty vials were inoculated with a variety of yeast and moulds, including the yeasts Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Geotrichum candidum, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and Zygosaccharomyces and the moulds Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Rhizopus stolonifer and a variety of Penicillium species at a level of 500-4000 cfu/g.
Geotrichum species, unlike C albicans, formed small, rough colonies of pale green appearance (Figure 1).
