gene-environment interaction A term used to indicate that an effect is due to a mixture of environmental factors (nurture) and genetic factors (nature). Most traits show gene-environment interactions, such as myopia, IQ test results, skin colour etc. Blood type and iris colour are predominantly genetically transmitted, whereas language is predominantly environmental. SRI International, an independent nonprofit research and development organization, today announced that researchers in its new Molecular Genetics Program are characterizing gene-gene and gene-environment interactions that may provide clues for predisposition to tobacco dependence, response to treatment for nicotine addiction, and susceptibility for certain cancers. The conference was co-organized by Dinato Di Monte and Deborah Cory-Slechta and brought together an impressive assemblage of epidemiologists, geneticists, clinicians, and individuals from a variety of basic research disciplines; it is considered one of the most stimulating and productive scientific meetings on gene-environment interaction in Parkinson's disease. |
