gemifloxacin,
an antiinfective that inhibits DNA gyrase. indications This drug is used to treat acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis and community-acquired pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae (including multidrug-resistant strains), H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. contraindications Known hypersensitivity to quinolones prohibits the use of this drug. adverse effects Adverse effects of this drug include somnolence, depression, insomnia, nervousness, confusion, agitation, diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, flatulence, heartburn, dry mouth, increased aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, constipation, abdominal pain, oral thrush, glossitis, stomatitis, rash, pruritus, urticaria, and visual disturbances. Life-threatening side effects include pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, and photosensitivity.
