gastrocnemius muscle rupture, gastrocnemius muscle avulsion

the muscle may have torn away from its insertion, in which case the tendon will be slack, or it may be a complete or partial separation of the belly of the muscle, when the muscle will be swollen and hard. There is a special case in the cow at calving. The cow may be unable to rise. If it does get up the hock is much closer to the ground than normal and the cow may be able to take weight on the leg only if the point of the hock reaches the ground.

the tendon of the gastrocnemius muscle. More accurately the achilles tendon.
