ganzfeld (gyanzˑ·fld),
n a technique developed to research mental imagery and anomalous cognition using visual deprivation, in which a subject is situated in a uniform visual field by wearing translucent, monochromatic goggles and in an analogous audio field using white noise playing through headphones.

ganzfeld
A visual stimulus that consists of completely homogeneous and colourless luminance conditions throughout. It is used especially when recording the standard electroretinogram.

In Ganzfeld, 2005, a man adept at the sensory deprivation technique known as the Ganzfeld procedure reclines on a leather divan, hands crossed over his chest, eyes covered with halved Ping-Pong balls, while an overhead lamp bathes him in glowing red light.
Both believers and skeptics agree that the most stringent method for studying psi is the one dubbed the ganzfeld (German for whole field) procedure.
From a distance, this Ganzfeld appeared to be a large, blue-lit screen set into the center of a gallery wall; after mounting a carpeted stair, viewers found they could step within and enter a kind of glowing cave (unfortunately only after donning noisy plastic booties).
