As electrons are lost from the reduced form, two molecules combine to create a dimer formed by a disulfide bridge, the process which can be reversed through reduction of the GSSG. Glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels, catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activities assay GSH and GSSG concentrations (nmol/mg protein) in liver were determined by commerical colorimetric GSH and GSSG assay kits (OxisResearch, Portland, OR, USA). GSH and GSSG levels were normalized to protein concentrations and the GSH/GSSG ratio was calculated. |
