CD44 A gene on chromosome 11q13 that encodes a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell–cell interactions, cell adhesion and cell migration, and which is a receptor for hyaluronic acid. CD44 also interacts with other ligands—e.g., osteopontin, collagens and matrix metalloproteinases—and participates in a range of cellular functions including lymphocyte activation, recirculation and homing, haematopoiesis and tumour metastasis.
